VICTORIA: What prompted you to choose acting as a career?

MALACHI : It's funny… I went to college at Morgan State University initially to play basketball and then I ended up breaking my right ankle my freshman year before the season even started in a pickup game. Then the same thing happened in my sophomore year! I never even walked on the basketball court at Morgan State University. So, my sophomore year a buddy of mine ask me to go to an audition with him. I had never done any acting. Long story short he convinced me to go and I got the lead role. The name of the play was Authority and my role was to play the chief of police. I ended up with a career in law enforcement as well. Also it wasn't what I set out to do. My father gave me a great example as a retired US Marshal who spent his whole career as a US Marshal, which landed me a career in the Police Department.

VICTORIA: What was the moment that settled it for you which led you to go all the way to choose acting as your career?

MALACHI: After the stage play I was pursuing it. I was getting training while in college and my major was Radio and TV broadcasting. My minor was Speech and Theater. Initially I went there for Political Science. That was going to be my thing, but when I was introduced to acting I changed my major to Radio and TV broadcasting and Speech and Theater. So, I began to train in theater while doing so you network and you start doing more auditions and I landed America's Most Wanted. I was actually on TV where everybody can see me on a bonafide project and then I was really ready to go! I just kept training, auditioning, attending workshops and classes.

VICTORIA: What was your biggest challenge to overcome as an actor?

MALACHI: My biggest challenge to overcome as an actor that's a great question! I don't really think that I had to overcome any challenges because I'm a people person. I'm very comfortable speaking in front of people. That would have been my biggest thing if I were not comfortable. I capitalized on my training because I relied on my training to get over the theater roles when performing in front of crowds.

VICTORIA: Do you have formal training that occurred in college?

MALACHI: It started in College and while I was in College I would attend workshops. I spent a lot of time in Manhattan New York catching a lot of trains. I did a lot of training and workshops! I would also take flights to Atlanta to attend workshops which usually lasted 3 days. Again you began to network and you hear things and meet people. In fact I met my agent in one of the workshops while in Atlanta.

VICTORIA: To date what do you think has been your defining role?

MALACHI: I would say Twas the chaos before Christmas.

VICTORIA: I thought you played a really good role!

VICTORIA: Is there a role that you really want to do?

MALACHI: I have a bucket list and it was a Christmas movie which I was able to fulfill. If you land a good Christmas movie you can pretty much guarantee seeing yourself around Christmas. The other role I would like to land is in a war movie.

VICTORIA: Any particular war movie that you have seen that drives you to want a role in a war movie?

MALACHI: I'm a big fan of Lone Survivor and Black Hawk Down. That’s the caliber of war movie I would love to be apart of.

VICTORIA: Tell me about interacting with the actors in the movie.

MALACHI: Before Twas the Chaos before Christmas I moved to Atlanta, which was funny because I was looking for employment. So, I was in Atlanta for about 6 months before I received a call from home to come back home to film Twas the Chaos before Christmas in D.C.

VICTORIA: That's right… It was filmed in The District!

MALACHI: Your right the entire movie was filmed in The District. Believe it or not the movie was filmed in 2 and 1/2 Weeks.

VICTORIA: Are you kidding me?

MALACHI: Yes there were 13 hour days but we got it done! We became a family, because we spent so much time together.

VICTORIA: I saw a few streets I naturally recognized and a few I had to figure out.

VICTORIA: What's the hardest emotion for you to act?

MALACHI: I don't really think there is a hardest emotion to act, but I will say in theater you have to do an emotional scene that can be very challenging. In theater you will have to perform that scene maybe two or three times in one day. I did a play which was on tour and it was called Can You Turn Your Back On God's glory. I played a character that contracted the AIDS virus and there was this one scene where he really breaks down crying. I had to do that scene maybe two or three times a day in which you don't want to cheat your audience and that could be difficult.

VICTORIA: What do you do to bring out that emotion and the reason that I ask this is because there was an article that came out that asked that question too Tom Hanks, Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Foxx and a couple of other actors. They said anger was the easiest but doing the other emotions were the hardest, which clearly you're saying you know that's the hardest. But you're right remembering your audience apparently pulls at you. But what did you use to get you there?

MALACHI: You have to personalize your character. You have to think of things in your life that created that emotion and that's how you make it authentic. So…. you have to dig into your life and bring those emotions out into that character.

VICTORIA: How hard is a comedy role?

MALACHI: I'm not a comedic actor per say but I can do it. I think the biggest thing is getting the chemistry down and spending time with the opposite person. Just having fun!

VICTORIA: Do you mean moving in the moment and reading body language?

MALACHI: Yes moving in the moment and just being authentic, you know. If you remember those words and you digest the words and regurgitate it while your performing you will be fine.

VICTORIA: Are there any tips you follow to learn your lines?

MALACHI: It's funny because, it seems like a gift of God because I can get a script today and I will pretty much know it in two days.

VICTORIA: Wow!

MALACHI: I can't take credit for that! I'm not just this great person who can do it or tell you this is what you need to do. Honestly… I have to put that on God! I didn't do anything different or I didn't take any training for it. It's just a god-given gift that I have been able to do.

VICTORIA: Okay just two more questions. So, do you find yourself having to hold yourself to a higher standard to move your craft in the direction you want or are seeking?

MALACHI: If you want to be taken seriously yes! But… I hold myself to a higher standard for something even more personal to me which is my most important job and that is being a father. I have children that are looking up to me and that are following my every move and paying attention to my every word. So, I walk differently anyway to be a perfect example for them which transfers over to my career.

VICTORIA: And kudos to you for that because you've done an excellent job with them. They are wonderful boys every one of them that I've met! I think the world of them and your mom and family. So, let me just ask one more question. If someone wanted to produce a movie what advice would you offer them? If someone had an idea to make a movie what do you think are the main things to address ?

MALACHI: I think the first thing you need to do is to find a story that's worthy of telling! And the best story we can tell is our own. We know that story better than anything! The book that I wrote Drama City… The concept is me! There’s no one to tell that story better other than me. Then you can take that experience and go with it, because when you're shooting that movie you will have people in there your networking with and people you're going to learn and you also have to study your craft. It doesn't matter if you have a good story…. Let me back that up. The first thing you need to do is learn how to go and direct a movie and how to produce a movie. Whatever you want to do go get trained, so you don't cheat the audience. Train first and learn your craft and then treat your audience to a good story.

VICTORIA: I would like to thank you for allowing me to interview you you've been absolutely wonderful and I'm awfully proud of you!

MALACHI: Thank you! I hope I continue to make people proud.

VICTORIA: Listen I heard your other son is in Resident.

MALACHI: Yes, he just started his career out here so he was in 2 episodes in the resident. He's also doing extra work right now. But it's just the beginning of his career and he was bit by the bug and he's loving it!

VICTORIA: Yeah he's following in dad’s footsteps!

MALACHI: Also Malachi Jr. is also out here in Atlanta and he just signed with an agent. He's been on for My Man, TV One and he's done theater. They're doing good! They're making old dad proud!

5 tip’s for rookie father’s

Tip #1: Make sure your not drinking and smoking! It’s not good to do anyway’s but parenting while on the bottle and or smoking, will only make it harder for you to be a great father and harder for your child to live as safe as possible. We all see the dangers of it in my opinion “POISON” and what they do to people. It makes it very hard to wake up in the middle of the night when the child is crying and needs to be fed or held. This is common sense for sure, but this is definitely a topic for reminder.

Tip # 2: Read to your infant/child everyday! Start while they are still in the womb and continue this until you and your teenage child can’t because your both busy with your daily commitments. Now when your child becomes a teenager turn the reading into informative learning. But make sure to read to your child. This is HIGHLY IMPORTANT!

Tip # 3: Place your child in a learning center at the age of 3. I don’t just mean daycare. Do a search for a learning center in your surrounding area’s. It will cost money for sure, but the benefit of having your child prepared before attending school is the key to success. I know, some of you are thinking you are going to do this yourself! Well for those of you who can please do and for those of you who can but it’s a struggle for many reasons utilize this tool. You and your child will surely benefit. Do any of you remember going into a class or a grade and not knowing what the teacher was trying to teach and having to try and learn something on the go? Don’t put your yourself or your child through this.

Tip #4; Get up early to prepare breakfast and lunch for your child! Don’t do the cereals, frozen foods, fast food and garbage foods that are quick and easy. Provide healthier sources of food each day for you and your family. Study what’s in the food you eat daily and refine your choices!

Tip #5: Keep your child enrolled in as many activities as possible all year long. It will help to make a well balanced individual and it builds a great resume for college applications. It will certainly keep your child or children from idling and help to develop the brain. Plus you and the children have one life to live. Make the most of it! Take pictures everyday so you have proof of your child participating in many activities. He or she will cherish those pictures and moments later in life. You and your grand children will too!

Anyone interested in learning how to box? Thankfully due to the growth of the sport you have many choices to choose from. I just completed a search of boxing in Alexandria Virginia and the search offered 18 different places to choose from in a very small area. In the district it’s about 4 fewer than P.G. county and A.V.A. That is pretty good, but let’s open up a few more ladies and fellas! You will have many different options to consider when selecting your form of boxing. MMA and UFC are available as one of the choices.

One place I want to highlight is the Charles Houston recreation center in Old Town. The brothers over there have built some talented fighters who are on the path to becoming household names. To date there are more boxers that I’m not aware of that have come out of or are participating in the program at the recreation center. Troy Isley is one of the young talented fighters who is ascending in his craft. Follow your DREAM Troy! Remember that name if you don’t already know it. For a more in depth story of

“Who Is Troy Isley“ check out the January 2020 issue!

D.M.V. Wonder Women

Written by -1976-

3/30/2020 1:43 a.m.

Join me as we Celebrate the Life of Yolanda Brown. I was able to catch up with Yolanda and ask her a few questions about her life experiences.

YB is a glowing soul who is full of energy! She is a very vibrant person. Yolanda obtained a Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from Bowie State University.

Currently she is teaching and has 2 pending patents as an active entrepreneur.

-1976- What was the most difficult challenge you dealt with as a teenager?

-YB- My senior year of track and field, the coaching staff that helped create the athlete that I was...decided to retire. It crushed my soul. I went through abandonment issues. That is when I began to lose my love for track.

-1976- Who was the most important person that helped you mature as a young women (18-21 years old) and what was the most important lesson you learned from them?

-YB- The most important person was my conscious and its ability to listen to GOD when he puts me in situations. There were so many times, I could have ended up hurt because I was with the wrong crowd. Once something fishy happened once, I never hung with that crowd again or large group gatherings. By that time, I was away at college in Louisiana at 17. I only knew 2 people that came from TC Williams. I wanted to figure things out on my own.

-1976- At what age were you able to sustain total independence?

-YB- Between the ages of 27 & 28 years old.

-1976- Did you ever experience resentment towards your mother or father because you were younger and presumably smarter than them?

-YB- I am currently working through something similar now with my mother. I sometimes feel that I may be resented by them due to my "success".

-1976- Were you taught how to choose a spouse or did you learn through trial and error and what are 3 signs a spouse shows that ends the opportunity?

-YB - My mother definitely dropped gems as I entered the body changing phase of life. She explain to me how men are going to try to connive me and to stay smart. I never wanted a spouse or ever really pictured myself married. I learned what I don't want while married.

1. Physical appearance is a sign of health to me .

2. Not being ambitious

3. Being inauthentic

-1976- What accomplishments are you most proud of?

-YB- I have a few moments, but one that stands out is when I auditioned for Shark Tank with my son in Pittsburgh.

-1976- Your capable of choosing any field to work in why did you choose to become a teacher?

-YB- I fell into teaching. Coach Johnson suggested that I become a substitute teacher to earn some money. Then I was hired as a long term substitute. Later I was hired as a full time teacher and that was it.

-1976- What problem do women encounter the most?

-YB- There are a plethora...but I believe one of the most problematic ones are men that assert their dominance in the work place. Or feel it is okay to automatically touch/hug/compliment you with no regard. This is a loaded question,

-1976- What are 3 rules you live by?

-YB- Do right by yourself, Do right by others and Do right by your maker!

-1976- At what age did you become a pure professional in the workplace setting and what is the single greatest unprofessional action young women display at work?

-YB- My very first year is when I became a pure professional. I brought new clothes, took my tongue ring out, stopped wearing makeup, fake nails and ended the gaudiness at work. After work I would wear those things I mentioned.

Having a work husband and discussing sexual boundaries. Certain conversations should be off limits at the workplace.

Thanks YB!

How often do you see a person and think to yourself, they appear to be a good person? When you see Barack & Michelle Obama do you get that feeling? I know everyone will not agree but I think we can agree we all see someone we think is a good person. An angel who is sent here to do good things. The eye test for me reveals a vibration of energy that generates good thoughts. The most important observation that is observed has to reflect a strong connection with GOD and JESUS for this feature. Walking and living in his word and having unwavering faith. This signal is a vibration of energy I received that caused me to trigger this thought. Let me introduce you to a glimpse of Hagi.

(Pronounced Hag - E)

-1976- At what age as a child do you remember going to church?

-HM- Ever since I was born my family has been taking me to church. Since then I have been going to church every Sunday.

-1976- When you were younger do you remember your first encounter with knowing God and Jesus is real?

-HM- Yes, I do when I took my first Holy Communion.

-1976- What are you seeking a degree in?

-HM- Computer science

-1976- How do you plan to make the world a better place, specifically what are you going to do?

-HM- I am planning to be more HUMBLE TO ALL human beings and then they will see a better world through me.

-1976- What’s one thing you do that you noticed other females don’t do?

-HM- I have self-respect.

-1976- Do you value marriage?

-HM- I do, I think marriage is an association to create a better generation!

-1976- Who is the most influential person in your life and why?

-HM- My mom, because since I was born she is the only person who showed me how to live independently and how to handle problems by myself.

-1976- Have you ever thought of being so great that you would be remembered by being inserted into history books?

-HM- I never thought of being inserted in history books, but I always thought I would make some things different.

-1976- What is your greatest accomplishment?

-HM- My greatest accomplishment is… I was not a morning person, then my job required me to work early in the morning and I trained myself to wake up early by 4 a.m. in which I had to use my alarm clock. Then I got use to it. Now I’m able to do it without using my alarm clock.

-1976- What are three important values that you think each person should have?

-HM- I would say each person should value time, family and self-respect.
